Olympian Javier Acevedo Leads Backstroke Masterclass at ESWIM

ESWIM had a special guest on deck this week as Canadian Olympian Javier Acevedo delivered a high-impact backstroke masterclass to our Performance, Youth, TOP, and Junior athletes. The session brought world-class technical insight, genuine inspiration, and a huge boost to the club’s training environment.

World-Class Backstroke Detail

Javier broke down the key pillars of elite backstroke in a clear, practical way athletes could apply immediately, including:

  • Bodyline & alignment: holding a long, stable line with a neutral head position
  • Rotation rhythm: driving rotation from the hips and tying it to the catch

  • The catch: narrow entry, early vertical forearm, and pulling back to maximise propulsion

  • Kick efficiency: maintaining a narrow, fast kick for stability and speed

  • Transitions & breakouts: timing the last stroke into the wall, sharp dolphin kicks, and breaking out into speed

Swimmers were fully engaged, asking questions, testing cues, and refining details throughout the session.

A Message That Resonated

Javier also spoke about discipline, resilience, and the habits that shaped his journey from age-group swimmer to Olympian. His reminder that “champions are built on ordinary days done well” made a visible impact across the group.

A Lift for ESWIM’s Culture

The visit energised swimmers and coaches alike. Athletes left talking about rotation timing, breakout angles, tempo control—proof that the session not only inspired but truly elevated understanding.

ESWIM thanks Javier Acevedo for sharing his expertise and strengthening the culture of excellence we strive to build every day.
